The Importance of Grounding

I see a lot of people in my therapy practice who have worked so hard to develop their spirituality. Often, they have spent time clearing old ancestral or familial issues. Perhaps, they meditate regularly and have resolved old traumas, but they still feel like something is missing. I also come across the over thinker, who spends much of their time worrying. They worry about having not quite got things right, or possible reasons why any given solution, or course of action won’t ever, ever work out. In these instances, a bit grounding can be really useful to help people achieve a sense of balance out . If we are too much in our heads, we are energetically out of balance. And of course, that is not a good thing.

To be achieve balance, not only do we need to work on our uppermost chakras for connection to Spirit, but we need to work on our lower chakras for connection to the Earth. We need this balance, both light and shadow, earth and sky, as above - so below!

And of course, there are many ways to ground. You can take your shoes off and walk or stand barefoot, connecting to Mother Earth. Perhaps you can imagine roots of energy growing out of your feet and anchoring you tree like into the Earth, so that you become a living embodiment of the planet. However, it is not always easy to go outside barefoot… the weather is too yucky, you haven’t the time and there is no greenery nearby.

So here, you can just take a bite to eat or drink. (This is particularly useful after a therapy session or any time where you have been meditating or connecting with Spirit.) If you are lucky enough to have access to crystals, particularly black crystals, you can hold these in your hands for a short while, perhaps once again imagining being deeply rooted. Rough tumbled haematite is great for this and a must for all therapists and those who journey or meditate often.

And of course, there is good old sounding…. humming, singing, clapping your hands, even just simply toning. These also being particularly good for stimulating your vagus nerve, so a win-win situation,

So the next time you take time to work on your spiritual development, take some time to ground too. Feel connected. Feel the benefit of both heaven and earth and notice how whole this makes you feel.
